Abstract
Objective: To analyze and discuss about the relevance and impact that effective communication has on the social and academic scenario of medical schools, as well as the consequences of an ineffective doctor-patient relationship, it has on the functionality of the health system and the support on the quality of life of patients. Bibliographic review: The ethical and operational principles of the Unified Health System are the pillars of the structuring of a medical consultation in primary care, and communication skills, as a tool for access to patient subjectivity, empathy and convincing are part of the medical-humanistic competence that must be developed, practiced and improved by future physicians. Nevertheless, in recent decades, the failure to conduct an intensification of the relationship between person and doctor impairs the proper functioning of the SUS, which aims to explore the patient as a whole and have positive action on their social sphere, feelings, ideas and expectations for their health. Final considerations: The advancement of medicine in Brazil is unquestionable, but medical schools, as much as the student himself, must focus on human and patient-focused care, so that the doctor-patient relationship can, in fact, flow.
