Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the frequency of hospital readmission after decline in respiratory domain in children who were admitted to the PICU. Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study conducted with children admitted to the PICU from a hospital unit in the state of Bahia. Children of both sexes, aged over 29 days to 13 years, who remained in the PICU for a period ≥ 24 hours were included. Children who did not have information on the Functional Status Scale (FSS), or without functional decline, and cases of death during the research period were excluded. Data were collected through the FSS assessment, through medical records from October to December 2023. Results: A total of 108 children were evaluated, of which only nine (8.3%) were eligible, 55.5% were male, with a mean age of 49 months (SD = 67.3), the mean length of hospital stay was 5 days and the main reason for hospitalization was previous neurological comorbidity (33.3%). Of the sample studied, three (33.3%) patients showed decline in the respiratory domain by FSS, of which only one (11.1%) was readmitted during the research period. The prevalence of global and respiratory functional decline was 0.08% and 0.02% respectively, with an incidence of readmissions of 0.1%. conclusion: The children admitted to the ICU did not show significant changes in respiratory function and other domains, consecutively no greater probability of readmission was found.
