Abstract

Objective: To investigate coagulation disorders and their impacts on patients infected with SARS-CoV-2. Bibliographic review: Betacoronavirus, characterized by high contagiousness, being recognized by the World Health Organization as a public health problem. The infection can cause significant health impacts, including coagulation disorders and severe thrombotic events. Literature findings indicate that SARS-CoV-2 can cause vascular damage through direct cytotoxic immune response and inhibition of the angiotensin-converting enzyme II, favoring the activation of the coagulation cascade via tissue factor and the development of thromboses. Furthermore, elevated levels of D-dimer, a product of fibrin degradation, are associated with coagulopathies in COVID-19 patients. Final considerations: Although there is still no consensus on the exact pathogenicity of these complications, it is known that the increase of PAI-1, thromboxane A2 and fibrinogen are associated with the immunothrombotic state of the infection. Therefore, new studies are needed to consolidate this association and guide effective therapeutic strategies.
