Abstract
Objective: To demonstrate the use of Pycnogenol® in the treatment of melasma and to characterize the physiopathological aspects of this disorder. Methods: The present work was carried out from an integrative literature review on the proposed theme. The search for information was carried out through Google Scholar, CAPES Periodicals, Pubmed, comparatively investigating the data from these research bases. Results: Scientific studies show that Pycnogenol® softens hyperpigmented spots, protects the skin against new marks and has antioxidant properties, thus having therapeutic action against lesions caused by melasma, with fewer side effects than topical formulations traditionally used as depigmenting agents. Final considerations: Pycnogenol® can be considered an alternative in the therapy of pigmentary disorders such as melasma. Its effects are satisfactory in terms of its antimelatogenic properties. However, for the treatment of melasma, complementary therapies and regular photoprotection may be necessary. Melasma has no cure, but as long as the skin receives proper treatment, the spots can be reduced or disappear.
