Abstract
Cross-sectional study, descriptive and retrospective approach to hospitalizations of the elderly due to femur fracture in the public health service in Brazil. During the study period, 397,585 thousand hospitalizations were registered, predominantly in females, with an average annual incidence of 213.83 per 100,000 elderly and average annual expenditure of R $ 85,839,680.38. Femur fractures among the elderly in Brazil have high incidence, steady growth, high lethality and high direct cost. Women are more affected than men and those aged 80 and over are more vulnerable in both morbidity and mortality.
