Abstract

Objective: To understand the epidemiological profile of deaths from Pulmonary Thromboembolism (PTE) in Brazil, from 2016 to 2020. Methods: This is an ecological time series, retrospective, descriptive study with a quantitative approach, whose data were obtained through from the Department of Informatics of the Unified Health System (DATASUS), in the subsection of the Mortality Information System (SIM) and by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). It was not necessary to submit the project to the Research Ethics Committee (CEP). Results: The number of deaths recorded by PTE in Brazil from 2016 to 2020 was 34,177, of which 14,325 (41.9%) were men and 19,845 (58.1%) were women. Similar mortality rates were observed for the age group from 20 to 59 years and the age group above 60 years. The female mortality rate is higher than that of males, especially in the age group over 80 years. Mortality from PTE in the Northeast and Southeast regions is higher than in other regions of the country. Conclusion: It is necessary to carry out more epidemiological studies in order to identify the determining factors of this pathology so that the correct diagnosis is made, enabling the execution of the appropriate treatment.
