Abstract

Objective: To analyze the content about damage control surgery (DCC) and its role in trauma, as well as its indications and patient profile. Literature review: CCD is a treatment that aims to ameliorate an unfavorable prognostic situation. The conditions that the CCD seeks to correct are patients that have the Lethal Triad consisting of hypothermia, metabolic acidosis and coagulopathy. The use of CCD may be necessary in trauma situations, but several factors must be taken into consideration before indicating this procedure. Furthermore, the best candidates for CCD in non-trauma patients are males over the age of 70 with multiple comorbidities, elevated lactate levels with acidosis, and severe sepsis or septic shock. In polytrauma patients with massive hemorrhage the procedure has been widely used. Final considerations: The likely candidate for such a procedure will be the one in which the chance of survival to definitive surgery is lower due to severe physiological compromise. However, this therapeutic choice continues to be debated due to variability in practical indications, eligibility criteria, and surgeon experience, since these are still subjective.
