Abstract

Objective: To review the use of e-cigarette and its relationship with lung disease. Literature review: The association between potential lung damage and e-cigarette use have shown that there is increased susceptibility to extracellular neutrophil trapping. The problem, therefore, lies in the fact that extensive degranulation characterizes some lung diseases involving inflammation, such as severe asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The term EVALI refers to electronic cigarette-induced lung damage. Epidemiological data have shown that the manifested damage seriously compromises lung function and can lead to death. The highest risk was observed among assiduous smokers. In reporting the main acute complications associated with EVALI, pneumothorax and pneumomediastinum are found. Among the main patterns of pneumopathies described, pneumonia, diffuse alveolar damage, giant cell interstitial pneumonia, and hypersensitivity pneumonitis also stand out. Final considerations: The main lung diseases associated with the use of electronic cigarettes are pneumopathies such as pneumonia, giant cell interstitial pneumonia, hypersensitivity pneumonitis, pneumothorax and pneumomediastinum. Moreover, it is necessary to implement more effective health education policies in order to reduce the proportion of users and consequently hospitalizations, complications, and deaths.
