Abstract
Objective: To investigate and characterize the impacts resulting from xerostomia management protocols in critically ill patients in ICUs. Methods: This was an integrative literature review, with a review question based on the PCC strategy (population, concept, context), with a search in MEDLINE via Pubmed, LILACS via VHL, Embase, Web of Science and Acervo + Index base. With the inclusion of primary studies carried out between 2007 and 2023, in English, Portuguese or Spanish. Results: Based on the included studies, different protocols can be used in the management of xerostomia in the ICU, alone aiming at hydrating the oral mucous membranes or associated with oral hygiene procedures, with emphasis on the additional use of topical agents, as observed in 92,31% studies, from the use of moistened gauze on the mucosa, artificial saliva, use of honey, sterile cold water spray, moisturizing creams based on aloe vera and menthol, vitamin C and vitamin E spray. Conclusion: The different xerostomia management protocols are useful tools and guarantee comfort, quality of life and hospitalization, due to their ability to reduce complaints of oral dryness and intensity of thirst, in addition to collaborating to maintain oral health.
