Abstract

Objective: To expose the relationship between bariatric surgery and eating disorders and to assess the risk of patients to present these disorders in the postoperative period. Bibliographic Review: Regarding the recurrence of eating disorders among patients who undergo bariatric surgery, it was found that the condition is frequent in candidates for this type of surgical intervention, being even more recurrent in those with high obesity. Furthermore, disorders are more common in the first 24 months after surgery. From the results found, the intimate relationship between eating disorders and the negative impacts of bariatric surgery is highlighted, and it is common for such disorders to be identified in patients who wish to undergo or have already undergone surgery. Thus, in many cases, eating disorders are responsible for preventing the success of this intervention, since the negative psychological impact on the patient can be extremely serious, in some cases even reaching depression. Final considerations: The need for a multidisciplinary approach in the treatment of obesity is highlighted, associating surgery with other interventions such as psychological follow-up. Thus, it will be possible to reduce the psychic impacts of this intervention and intensify the positive results.
