Abstract
Objective: To describe the use of gestrinone as a therapeutic resource in the clinical management of endometriosis. Methods: This is an integrative review, whose data search as carried out in the Scientific Electronic Library Online (Scielo), National Library of Medicine (PubMed), and Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS) databases, with a temporal cut-off between 1989 and 2022. Results: Of the 365 articles found, 15 were selected for the final analysis. Gestrinone acts on the endocrine system, inhibiting the production of estrogen and progesterone by the ovary and therefore suppressing the growth and proliferation of endometrial tissue outside the uterus. In addition, gestrinone has anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory effects, which may help to reduce inflammation associated with endometriosis. Although gestrinone is effective in relieving the symptoms of endometriosis, it can also cause side effects such as acne, weight gain, changes in mood and libido. Furthermore, gestrinone may increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases and other health conditions. Final considerations: Gestrinone can be considered an effective pharmacological option for treating endometriosis by alleviating pelvic pain, the main symptom of the condition.
