Abstract

Objective: To expose the current scenario of HIV infection prevention with regard to the use of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP). Literature Review: PrEP is a pharmacological innovation that allows users to be almost completely protected against HIV infection. In addition to previously existing prevention methods, this drug has changed the epidemiology of virus transmission in key populations, providing a considerable positive impact for public health, but still faces barriers to its implementation and adherence by both health systems and users. The literature describes moderately successful adherence, with substantial gaps arising from the socioeconomic, cultural and psychological limitations inherent in the dissemination and use of an HIV drug. Final Considerations: This article presents the current literature on PrEP use, adherence, expectations, reality and attitudes. It can be considered that the use of pre-exposure prophylaxis is increasingly widespread, but that there is still a lot of potential for implementing more robust programs aimed at reducing HIV transmission.
