Abstract

Objective: To report a case of toxoplasmosis neuroretinitis in a young woman undergoing treatment for hepatitis C. Methods: This is a descriptive observational study, based on an analysis of the patient's medical records, correlating them with data found in the literature. Case details: A 44-year-old woman with a normal ophthalmologic history and a clinical history of hepatitis C, never previously treated, contracted in childhood due to blood transfusion, asymptomatic, presented with changes in routine imaging exams in 2020, which showed progression of liver fibrosis. During treatment, she had a fever of 39.5°, difficulty walking and moving her limbs, tachycardia, fatigue, jaundice, scotomas, photophobia, eye pain, visual blurring in both eyes, predominantly in the left eye. Laboratory tests confirmed toxoplasmosis and optical coherence tomography (OCT) showed alterations suggestive of toxoplasmosis neuroretinitis. Final considerations: Although the presentation of neuroretinitis due to toxoplasmosis infection is considered rare, it should be considered as a differential diagnosis in cases of scotoma, ocular pain, blurred vision and photophobia.
