Abstract
Objective: Evaluate the clinical profile of mothers and children in the first six months of life, as well as the epidemiological profile of exclusive and non-exclusive breastfeeding, vaccination, presence of respiratory infections, gastrointestinal symptoms, and weight gain in these children. Methods: This is a descriptive study, of the prospective and retrospective cohort type. Data were obtained through questionnaires sent monthly to the mothers of Vale do Aço - MG over the six-month research period. A sample calculation was performed using a tool available on the OpenEpi Version 3 website, an open-source calculator. Results: The study started with 36 mothers, and at the end of the research, there were 23 participating mothers. The results revealed that the occurrence of respiratory infections did not have a significant change in frequency over the six months, and the decrease in vaccination rate was not statistically relevant. However, the presence of gastrointestinal symptoms showed a significant reduction in its incidence. Conclusion: The current study highlights a statistically significant relationship between the practice of exclusive breastfeeding and a decrease in the rates of gastrointestinal symptoms during the first six months of the baby's life. This reinforces the importance of exclusive breastfeeding in the early months as a protective factor.
