Abstract

Objective: To describe the effects of topical insulin in the treatment of corneal pathologies. Literature review: Insulin is a protein hormone produced by the pancreatic beta cells, playing a crucial role in glycemic control and metabolic processes in the human body. Beyond these functions, insulin is essential for tissue repair, as it activates anti-inflammatory cytokines and promotes tissue healing. The cornea, a transparent, convex, avascular, and highly innervated ocular structure, acts as a protective barrier against injuries and infectious agents, playing a vital role in safeguarding the internal structures of the eye. In the treatment of corneal pathologies, topical insulin has proven effective in re-epithelializing persistent epithelial defects, reducing the need for surgical interventions. Therefore, topical insulin can enhance corneal recovery and minimize complications associated with traditional treatments. Final considerations: Topical insulin has proven effective in treating corneal pathologies, offering good availability, low cost, and excellent tolerance.
