Abstract
Objective: Describe the correlation between insulin resistance and the development of Alzheimer’s disease. Literature review: Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form of neurodegenerative dementia, characterized by the loss of nerve cells and synaptic destruction, especially in brain areas associated with cognitive function, such as the cerebral cortex and hippocampus. The pathology involves the accumulation of beta-amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles formed by tau protein, compromising neurological performance and blocking electrical signals. Patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus exhibit systemic insulin resistance, which may contribute to the development of the disease in question, as brain insulin resistance reduces glucose uptake by neurons, impairing neuroplasticity and cognition. Research is exploring new therapies, such as immunotherapies, to prevent neuroinflammation and protein accumulation. Conclusions: Insulin resistance in the brain impairs glucose uptake by neurons, contributing to the development and progression of Alzheimer’s disease. Future research should focus on therapeutic strategies that modulate this resistance to improve prevention and treatment of the disease.
