Abstract

Objective: Analyze systemic impacts of off-label use of semaglutide. Literature review: Semaglutide, a GLP-1 analog, was initially approved for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Studies show that, in addition to lowering glucose levels, it promotes weight loss by inducing satiety and delaying gastric emptying, factors that reduce caloric intake. However, off-label use for weight loss, without medical supervision, is a growing practice driven by the drug’s rapid weight-loss effect and popularity. The most common adverse effects include nausea, vomiting, and risk of cholelithiasis. Aesthetic complications, such as “Ozempic Face,” characterized by facial sagging and aging, have also been reported. Final considerations: Although semaglutide shows effectiveness in weight loss, the lack of medical supervision in off-label use may lead to health risks and undesirable effects. Therefore, due to these risks, patients should be monitored, and lifestyle changes should be integrated into treatment to prevent weight regain. The popularity of off-label use highlights the need for further studies to better understand the long-term effects and to develop guidelines that ensure safe and effective use of this medication.
