Abstract

Objective: To analyze the incidence, risk factors, and major maternal and fetal complications associated with placental abruption (PA). Literature review: PA is a severe and potentially life-threatening obstetric condition that can lead to significant maternal and fetal complications. The main risk factors include maternal hypertension, smoking, and a history of previous obstetric complications. The pathophysiology involves the formation of retroplacental hematomas, compromising fetal oxygenation and potentially resulting in hypoxia. Diagnosis is based on clinical findings and imaging studies, which are essential for effective obstetric management. Common complications include maternal hemorrhage, fetal distress, and preterm birth. Final considerations: Early identification of predisposing factors and the adoption of appropriate intervention strategies are crucial in reducing PA complications. Prenatal care and specialized obstetric assistance play a vital role in minimizing maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality.
