Abstract

Objective: This article aims to analyze the impact of Physical Activity (PA) on psychopathological disorders and highlight the importance of exercise for mental health, showing how exercise can prevent and treat disorders such as depression and anxiety. Methods: Integrative review of studies selected from the MEDLINE, LILACS and PUBMED databases, using specific descriptors to identify 2,497 relevant articles from the last five years, of which 15 were included in the analysis.  Results: Mental disorders, influenced by physiological factors such as stress, genetics and sociocultural factors, such as lifestyle, are less prevalent in active individuals compared to sedentary ones. In this sense, PA promotes physical and psychological well-being through several mechanisms, such as the release of beneficial hormones, the reduction of adipose tissue and the improvement of cardiopulmonary capacity. Thus, it is associated with significant improvements in mental health, with a reduction in the prevalence of psychopathological disorders and a better perception of health status. Conclusion: The studies reinforce the need to integrate regular PA practice as an effective strategy for promoting mental well-being and suggest the need for further research to explore the advantages of PA in the remission of psychopathological disorders.
