Abstract

Objective: To identify what the literature addresses about the impact of fecal and urinary incontinence on the quality of life (QOL) of the aged. Methods: This is an integrative review using the Pubmed database, with the Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) descriptors: Fecal Incontinence, Urinary Incontinence, Quality of Life and Aged, alternated by the Boolean operator “AND”. Results: Fourteen articles were selected. The year and country with the highest number of publications were 2019 (4) and the United States (7). The two thematic categories that emerged were: Impact of urinary incontinence and fecal incontinence on the QoL of aged people related to the emergence of mental problems; Impact of urinary incontinence and fecal incontinence on the QoL of aged people related to the emergence of physical problems. Conclusion: It was found that urinary and fecal incontinence has a mental and physical impact on the QoL of the aged. Thus, various factors and treatments are related to an impairment of this quality, and it is extremely important to identify them for these aged people to receive the appropriate treatment in order to promote an improvement in their QoL.
