Abstract

Objective: To identify the repercussions of depression on the quality of life of institutionalized elderly individuals. Methods: This is an integrative review, through the search for publications in the Virtual Health Library through Latin American and Caribbean Literature in Health Sciences (LILACS), Nursing Databases (BDENF), Coleciona SUS and Periodic Index, using the descriptors: “Depression”, “Elderly”, “Quality of life” and “Long-Term Care Institution for the Elderly”. Articles from 2018 to 2023, in English and Portuguese, were considered, with a final sample of seven articles. Results: Institutionalization in Long-Term Care Institutions for the Elderly (LTCIs) increases the propensity for depression, influenced by physical restrictions and social isolation, impacting cognitive function and autonomy, worsening pre-existing health conditions, making it difficult to manage chronic diseases and negatively influencing eating habits. In LTCFs, depression manifests itself with more pronounced symptoms compared to elderly individuals living with family members. Final considerations: Effective treatment of depression is crucial to improving the emotional state and quality of life of elderly individuals, despite the challenges of early detection. The central role of nursing in LTCFs includes emotional support, medication monitoring, and individualized care plans.
