Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) in controlling the symptoms of Irritable Bowel Syndrome. Methods: An integrative literature review was conducted by searching the PubMed, SciELO, and LILACS databases from 2013 to 2023. Randomized clinical trials with adults diagnosed with IBS who underwent CBT were included. The selection was conducted by two independent reviewers, with the help of the Rayyan platform, following the PRISMA criteria. Methodological quality was assessed using the Jadad scale. Nine studies were included in the final analysis. Results: Significant improvement in gastrointestinal symptoms, reduction of anxiety and depression, and increase in patients' quality of life were observed. The benefits were reported in both face-to-face and online therapies, with effects maintained for up to one year. CBT has proven to be a safe and effective intervention, despite the heterogeneity between studies and the lack of standardization in the protocols and instruments used. Furthermore, patients reported greater autonomy in managing symptoms and better adaptation to stressful situations. The data also suggest that the therapeutic alliance plays a relevant role in the positive results of the intervention. Final considerations: CBT contributes positively to the management of IBS and improves the well-being of patients.
