Abstract

Objective: To investigate the importance of adherence to pharmacological treatment combined with cognitive behavioral psychotherapy in Bipolar Affective Disorder. Bibliographic review: Combined treatment between psychotherapy based on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and psychopharmacological management is essential in promoting a reduction in mood swings and symptoms, both in depressive and high mood phases. In addition, factors such as adequate psychoeducation, a support network and a consistent pharmacological treatment plan are factors that corroborate treatment adherence in Bipolar Affective Disorder, with stabilizers and antipsychotics being two important lines of pharmacology used. Furthermore, non-adherence to treatment can lead to greater damage during mood swings, neurocognitive impairment and difficulties in regulating mood, which directly interferes with patients' quality of life. Final considerations: The combined treatment of cognitive behavioral psychotherapy and psychopharmacology is indispensable for promoting greater well-being in the lives of patients with Bipolar Affective Disorder. Difficulties or lack of adherence to treatment can lead to damage to quality of life, neurocognitive impairment and difficulties in maintaining the patient's euthymia.
