Abstract
Objective: To analyze the impact of sleep on the clinical course of epilepsy in the pediatric population, highlighting its influence on seizure control, development, and quality of life. Literature review: Epilepsy is a neurological disorder characterized by recurrent seizures resulting from dysregulated neural activity. In childhood, the presence of sleep disorders, such as insomnia, worsens the clinical picture, negatively affecting cognitive, emotional, and physical development. Deep sleep is essential for brain plasticity, memory consolidation, and hormonal regulation. Children with epilepsy often present impairments in neuropsychomotor development, exacerbated by poor sleep quality. Moreover, seizures may occur during sleep or upon awakening, favored by sleep deprivation and circadian rhythm alterations. Literature suggests that interventions such as sleep hygiene and relaxation techniques contribute to seizure reduction and improved well-being. Final considerations: Sleep should be considered an essential therapeutic element in the management of childhood epilepsy, with a direct impact on seizure control and overall development.
