Abstract
Objective: To describe nursing care for preoperative patients. Methods: This is a descriptive, qualitative, integrative literature review. Data collection was performed in the following databases and electronic portals: Latin American and Caribbean Health Literature and Medical Literature Analysis and Retrieval System Online. A total of 160 studies were found, and after applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 25 articles were identified. The review followed the recommendations of the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses. Results: Five studies were included to complete the scope of this review. The results indicate that preoperative nursing care is essential to ensure patient safety and quality of care. Important aspects include correct patient identification, clinical and nutritional assessment, especially in cases of diabetes mellitus, and fasting management, which should be individualized to avoid complications. Communication between the multidisciplinary team and the patient and their family is essential for care. Final considerations: Consider that preoperative nursing care is essential for promoting safe care and preventing complications during the perioperative period.
