Abstract

Objective: To understand the role of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors in the treatment of Myasthenia Gravis. Methods: An integrative literature review was conducted in the PubMed, SciELO, and MedLine databases, considering articles published between 2014 and 2024. Studies in Portuguese and English addressing the use of acetylcholinesterase inhibitors (ACEIs) in the management of Myasthenia Gravis were included. After applying the inclusion and exclusion criteria, 24 articles were selected for full analysis. Results: The reviewed studies showed that ACEIs act by increasing the availability of acetylcholine at the neuromuscular junction, which significantly improves muscle strength and reduces patient fatigue. However, they do not interfere with the autoimmune process of the disease and may trigger undesirable cholinergic effects, such as diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and bronchoconstriction, limiting the ideal therapeutic dose. It was also observed that the clinical response varies among patients, requiring continuous monitoring and individual dose adjustment. Final considerations: ACE inhibitors are indispensable in the symptomatic management of Myasthenia Gravis, but their adverse effects reinforce the need for individualized follow-up.
