Abstract
Objective: To evaluate the antioxidant effectiveness of secondary metabolites from Streptomyces spp. isolated from soils of the Imperatriz landfill. Methods: Soil samples were collected, from which Streptomyces strains were isolated, purified, and identified. After this step, organic extracts containing secondary metabolites were obtained to evaluate biological activity. Tests to evaluate the antioxidant activity of isolated Streptomyces extracts were performed using scavenging of the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) free radical. Results: Streptomyces were identified by evaluating macromorphological characteristics, including color, texture, and hardness of the colonies. Two microorganisms of the same genus were isolated, exhibiting reliefs, whitish halos, and the production of a burnt yellow pigment. Microscopically, spiral spore chains and short hyphae were observed. The tests used during the research showed positive results, ranging from 40% to 90%, demonstrating their significant capacity to neutralize the DPPH free radical. Conclusion: The results of the studies confirmed the presence of antioxidant activity in the secondary metabolites extracted from actinomycetes isolated from the landfill.
