Abstract

Objective: To analyze the epidemiological profile of hospitalizations among adults aged 20 to 59 years in Teresina–PI from 2021 to 2025. Methods: This quantitative, cross-sectional epidemiological study used secondary data from the Brazilian Unified Health System Hospital Information System (SIH/SUS), available through DATASUS (TabNet), concerning adults admitted to 19 public hospitals. Year, sex, age group, race/skin color, type and causes of hospitalization, costs, and outcome were analyzed using frequencies and the chi-square test (p < 0.05). Results: A total of 233,484 hospitalizations were recorded, predominantly emergency admissions (87.09%), female patients (59.6%), young adults, and individuals classified as brown/mixed race (64.8%). Obstetric causes prevailed among women (52.5%), whereas injuries and external causes predominated among men (39.6%). The leading causes of death were certain infectious and parasitic diseases (32.0%), external causes (13.6%), and respiratory diseases (11.2%). Conclusion: The identified profile reinforces the need to strengthen primary care, emergency services, and preventive actions. The findings should be interpreted considering the use of secondary data and the incomplete consolidation of 2025 records at the extraction date.
