Abstract

The present study delimits itself to present reflections on the importance of sociolinguistics to contribute to the teaching of the Portuguese language. The general objective is to analyze the reflections on the theme and to substantiate its importance and contribution to the Portuguese language. The specific objectives refer to the conception of the Portuguese language, identification of a more productive path in the Portuguese teaching edge, its importance and the analysis of the Portuguese language teacher. It is justified by the relevance of the study in the need to answer how sociolinguistics is beneficial or not to education, specifically in the discipline of Portuguese language. This bibliographical research was supported by authors such as Lima and Mioto (2007). During the surveys the study was collaborated with works by Bagno (2003, 2007), Bortoni-Ricardo (2005, 2009, 2011), Lobov (1969, 1972) and other authors. It is concluded that it is important that teachers in general have greater access to the knowledge provided by the sociolinguistic approach of teaching of the mother tongue, so as to enable their students to learn more effectively the standard spoken and written language without devaluing or denying his spontaneous language. This view is justified since language constitutes one of the most powerful instruments of action and social transformation, being the acquisition of the standard norm fundamental for the exercise of citizenship.
