Abstract
This article sought to infer the importance of palliative care in home services for patients with advanced dementia. Under this perspective, it is necessary to establish the concept of palliative care, which refers to care practices promoted by a multidisciplinary team with the objective of improving quality of life of patients and their families in face of disease or worsening conditions that threatens the continuity of life. The primary severe dementias are: vascular dementia, frontotemporal dementia, Lewy body dementia and Alzheimer's disease. Palliative treatment had a positive impact on the patient's well-being and improved the process of end-of-life not only for the patient's satisfaction, but also for his/her relatives and caregivers. Moreover, one should consider psychological aspects from the impact of such services on caregivers, since some patients may present behavioral changes, impairing care delivery. Furthermore, problems associated with financial demands that apply to palliative care in home services, leading to service dismissal, should be considered.
