Abstract
Objective: To analyze how to reduce morbidity and mortality rates, caused by the risks of breast cancer in postmenopausal patients, along with the prevention of late or premature sequelae, through early screening in Primary Health Care (PHC). Literature review: Regarding breast cancer, the causes and risk factors were analyzed, its relationship to hormone replacement in symptomatic patients in menopause, prevention through screening, taking into account its classification and methods, and how this implies the problem of mammographic over-screening, as well as presenting the difficulties and impasses for the implementation of screening, given the socioeconomic factors. Final considerations: It proved the fundamental participation of primary care in breast cancer screening in postmenopausal women and showed possible failures in this process, determining the importance of quaternary prevention in reducing iatrogenic events and overdiagnoses, as well as optimizing the costs of the health system. Therefore, health education and encouragement of these women to perform screening for this disease is necessary.
