Abstract

Objective: To analyze the main epidemiological aspects related to plastic surgery in Brazil in recent years. Methods: This is a descriptive study with an epidemiological bias, in which data published in 2019 by the Brazilian Society of Plastic Surgery and information obtained by the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery in 2020 were observed. Prevalence of interventions was evaluated surgical and non-surgical, evolution of aesthetic and reparative surgeries, as well as distribution of procedures according to sex and age. Results: Brazil occupied the second place in the world ranking of plastic surgeries, carrying out approximately 2.5 million interventions, 58.2% of which refer to operations. Most of the interferences were performed by women and the most prevalent age group was that between 19 and 50 years old. Regarding non-surgical methods and reparative surgeries, the first presented an increase of 32.5% in the last 4 years, while the second decreased by 3.3%. Final considerations: In cases where the interference is unnecessary or harmful to the patient's health, caution and critical and ethical senses, on the part of the plastic surgeon, are essential for the evaluation of each case, allowing the effective planning of the process and the reduction risks and complications that may occur.
