Abstract

Objetive: Evaluate the importance of the administration of plants and fish-based omega-3 for decrease, treatment, and prevention of cardiovascular diseases (CVD) following the current guidelines of recommendations. Bibliographic review: Based on the studies used related to the use of omega-3, the main types that benefit cardiovascular health are alpha lipoic acid (ALA), which has a vegetable origin and is found in soy, flax and chestnut, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and acid docosahexaenoic (DHA) that have animal origin and are found in oily fish. It was observed that, the intake of this nutrient as a supplement, plus a healthy daily diet, physical activities, non-adherence to smoking, weight control and care for comorbidities that are risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, dyslipidemia and family history decrease the probability of developing cardiovascular disease (CVD), as well as help in the treatment of these. Final considerations: There are proven benefits in the use of omega-3 and, to evaluate its efficiency studies can be improved, but healthy habits recommended by the American Heart Association (AHA) and the Brazilian Society of Cardiology (BSC) are essential to maintain cardiovascular health.
