Abstract
Objective: To understand the difficulties in the diagnosis and treatment of acute otitis media and seek to understand the dangers arising from the imprecision of this diagnosis in the care of children. Methods: This study carried out research on the National Library of Medicine (PubMed) and SciELO platforms, prioritizing works from the last 10 years, 2010 to 2020. The increase in temporal delimitation in the databases was necessary due to the difficulty of finding recent articles on the subject. exposed theme. 23 articles were selected. The descriptors were “Otitis media”, “Diagnosis”, “Otorhinolaryngology” and “Drug Resistance”. Results: Based on these data, the existence of diagnostic and therapeutic imprecision in children's AOM was evidenced. This conclusion is supported directly by the analyzes of 5 authors and indirectly by the analysis of the others analyzed here. All say that: AOM is difficult to diagnose; it is a common and natural disease in children and is self-limiting in most cases; there is an excessive and unnecessary use of antibiotics; there is a generalized diagnostic inaccuracy among health professionals. Final considerations: Professionals are able to properly identify and treat the disease, but training courses still need to be better structured to avoid diagnostic inaccuracies in the future and to raise awareness of the indiscriminate use of antibiotics.
