Abstract
Objective: To analyze the characteristics of Parkinson's Disease (PD). Bibliographic review: PD is a progressive disorder in which dopamine-producing cells located in the substantia nigra of the brain degenerate. It affects more than 10 million people worldwide, and this number is expected to double by 2030, given the aging of the world's population. The disease is characterized by a core set of movement (motor) abnormalities such as slowness of movement, muscle stiffness, and tremors, as well as a range of non-motor features such as constipation, anxiety, and dementia. Final considerations: PD is the second most common neurodegenerative disease with motor and non-motor symptoms that compromise the patient's quality of life. Its diagnosis is clinical based on the bradykinesia triad or slowness of movement associated with resting tremor and/or rigidity. Pharmacological treatment is done through dopamine replacement, but it does not provide a cure or delay the progression of the disease, acting only on its symptoms, being based on Carbidopa/Levodopa drugs. In addition, strategies such as complementary medicine and stimulation of physical activity are widely used in association with pharmacological therapy.
