Abstract

Objective: To evaluate the clinical-epidemiological profile and quality of life in patients undergoing gastroplasty. Methods: This was an observational, quantitative-descriptive research, using an instrument containing variables of the socioeconomic profile and social habits, pre- and postoperative clinical and epidemiological profile, associated comorbidities and their progression after gastroplasty, and quality of life of patients. Data collection was online, between March and April 2023, recruiting 85 individuals followed by the Program of Assistance and Prevention to Morbid Obesity (POM) of the municipal health network of Foz do Iguaçu/PR. Results: The survey addressed, in majority, women (n=73; 85.88%), between 40 and 55 years (n=52; 61.18%), with gastroplasty performed in 2019 (n=33;38.32%). Regarding health, they reported reduced hypertension (n=20; 23.53%) and improved rates or normalization for type II diabetes (n=36; 42.35%), dyslipidemia (n=24; 34.12%), vascular-peripheral diseases (n=30; 35.29%), and sleep apnea (n=45; 52.94%). As for quality of life, they indicated improvement or much improvement in self-esteem (n=68; 80.00%), disposition and work performance (both n=65; 76.47%). Conclusion: Surgery reduced the Body Mass Index (BMI) and comorbidities, improving the quality of life of patients, which reinforces the benefits of gastroplasty in the treatment of severe obesity and associated conditions.
