Abstract

Objective: To elucidate the importance of the red reflex for the detection of congenital eye pathologies through grounded and uniform scientific knowledge to add to the clinical practice of health professionals and inform the general population of its importance. Methods: The present work is an integrative review of literature based on evidence, whose composition took place through the following steps: identification of the topic of interest and select the research question, search for articles in the digital databases, establish the inclusion and exclusion criteria and, later, analysis and discussion of the results obtained. Results: It is inferred that the red reflex test, when performed correctly and as early as possible, can detect suspicious changes and diagnoses of ocular pathologies that, if not detected, could generate visual complications or even blindness in newborns. Final considerations: It is confirmed, in this way, that the early detection of visual changes can modify the course of the disease and prevent children from becoming blind for reasons that could be corrected if they were identified as soon as possible.
