Abstract
Objective: To describe the follow-up of patients who had copper IUD inserted in the immediate postpartum period from January to December 2020. Methods: This is an observational, descriptive, analytical, retrospective study in which the medical records of patients who had copper IUD inserted in the immediate postpartum and were referred to the family planning and were analyzed for one year. Results: 363 women were included, 71% were between 18 and 34 years old and 57% had the insertion after cesarean section. Most patients (80.2%) had already had previous pregnancies. Alarmingly, a total of 55.4% of the sample had no follow-up, 19% requested removal of the copper IUD and only 8.2% kept using the method for more than one year. During the follow-up visits, most patients were asymptomatic and the main complaints were vaginal discharge, altered mesenteric flow and pelvic pain. The observed pregnancy rate was 1.7%, higher than expected for the method. Conclusion: We conclude that patients had a precarious follow-up, showing several weaknesses in the program, despite the importance of making available long term contraceptive methods in the Unified Health System.
