Abstract
Objective: To identify the most relevant endocrine disruptors related to female infertility, in order to facilitate appropriate management and promote quality of life and reproductive health. Methods: This is an integrative retrospective literature review on the implication of endocrine disruptors in female fertility, based on articles collected from medical databases (SciELO, LILACS, and PubMed) published from 2018 to 2023. Results: This review highlighted the following EDs as the main ones capable of altering female fertility: bisphenol A (BPA), phthalates, Per- and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), triclosan, pesticides, and heavy metals. They appear to have similar actions, interfering with the hypothalamic-pituitary-ovarian axis (HPO) and mimicking steroid hormones. These actions can affect ovulation, promote amenorrhea, hinder embryonic implantation, and be related to a higher likelihood of presenting with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, and primary ovarian insufficiency. Final considerations: Given that this exposure is widespread and daily and causes deleterious effects on female fertility, knowledge about them by professionals from all health fields is essential for appropriate management, aiming to reduce prolonged exposure to avoid deleterious effects in the female fertility.
