Abstract

Objective: To assess the knowledge level and habits of runners regarding the interrelationship between oral health and sports practice. Methods: A cross-sectional, exploratory-descriptive study with a quantitative approach was conducted involving a team of running athletes from the state of Maranhão. Data collection was conducted through an in-person questionnaire administered over a two-month period. The data were analyzed using SPSS v21.0 software and presented in absolute and relative frequency tables, using a descriptive approach. Results: 82.2% of the athletes recognize the influence of oral health on sports performance, but 100% reported not having dental care at their club. Mouth breathing was observed in 81.5% of participants, while 43.2% were unaware of the relationship between dental medications and doping. Although 61% brush their teeth more than twice a day, only 37.7% floss regularly. Furthermore, high consumption of supplements and isotonic drinks and the presence of temporomandibular disorders were identified, highlighting deficiencies in dental care. Conclusion: The research shows that athletes recognize the importance of oral health in sports, but reveal a lack of knowledge about aspects such as the use of dental medications and doping. Educational initiatives and studies on this topic are needed.
