Abstract
Objective: To describe the frequency of sociodemographic, clinical, and nursing diagnostic variables among individuals with chest pain in an emergency department. Methods: A cross-sectional, quantitative study with retrospective data collection, conducted at a medium-sized hospital. The sample consisted of 1,656 individuals. Data were collected using a research instrument and nursing diagnoses designated by the researchers, entered into a spreadsheet, and analyzed using descriptive statistics. Results: Of the analyzed sample, 184 (11.11%) individuals presented with chest pain, with 74.46% classified as high priority. The sample was predominantly composed of older adults (37.5%) with comorbidities (65.76%). Clinical care was predominant (92.39%); the most frequent nursing diagnoses were: acute pain (84.78%), risk of impaired cardiovascular function (57.61%), and impaired comfort (55.98%). Conclusion: The causes of chest pain were found to be multifaceted, highlighting the need for nurses to take ownership of the nursing process in order to identify altered human responses and plan timely outcomes and interventions in situations requiring rapid clinical reasoning and critical thinking.
