Abstract
Objective: Investigate the association between serum levels of 25-hydroxyvitamin D and the lipid profile in elderly hypertensive residents of Alagoas, considering related cardiometabolic variables. Methods: This was an observational cross-sectional study based on secondary analysis of data from the “I Alagoas Diagnosis on Older Adults’ Health” project. A total of 270 individuals aged ≥60 years with arterial hypertension were included. Anthropometric variables, body composition, blood pressure, and laboratory tests were assessed. Participants were classified as vitamin D sufficient (≥30 ng/mL) and insufficient (<30 ng/mL). Results: The sample had a median age of 71 years, predominantly female (68.5%) and highly physically inactive (84.1%). Vitamin D insufficiency was associated with higher levels of total cholesterol, LDL-c, and non-HDL cholesterol (p<0.001). No differences were observed for HDL-c, glycemia, or blood pressure. An inverse correlation was found between 25(OH)D and non-HDL cholesterol (p<0.001), LDL-c (p<0.001), and total cholesterol (p=0.001). In multivariate logistic regression adjusted for sex, age, glycemia, and BMI, total cholesterol (p=0.003), LDL-c (p=0.012), non-HDL cholesterol (p=0.003), and HDL-c (p=0.018) were significantly associated with vitamin D insufficiency. Conclusion: Vitamin D insufficiency was associated with a worse lipid profile in hypertensive older adults, suggesting a potential clinical relevance of vitamin D monitoring as a complementary component in metabolic assessment.
