Abstract

Objective: To compare crosslinking and intracorneal ring segment techniques for the treatment of keratoconus in the pediatric population. Bibliographic review: Keratoconus is a disease that causes changes in the shape of the cornea, which takes on the shape of a cone, which can cause myopia, astigmatism and visual impairments in the affected individual. The disease usually begins at puberty, and progresses into adulthood. Two techniques can be used in keratoconus therapy in pediatric patients: reticulation and intracorneal ring segment. Crosslinking is a minimally invasive surgical procedure, which uses ultraviolet light, and which aims to stabilize the disease, preventing its progression. The intracorneal ring segment, in turn, is a technique for remodeling the cornea, in which a ring is implanted, which refractive errors remain and causes an improvement in the regularity of the corneal surface. Final considerations: It can be inferred that crosslinking is the best technique for treating keratoconus in the pediatric population, due to its better prognosis and safety and the negative characteristics of the use of the ring segment, such as unpredictability, aggressiveness and low adherence. However, more studies are included on the topic for a more reliable conclusion.
