Abstract
Objective: To identify vulnerability to sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in 4 remaining quilombo communities (CRQ) in the state of Maranhão, Brazil. Methods: From September 2018 to January 2019, data were collected in 4 CRQ, Soledade, São Miguel, Juçatuba and Nova Peptal. The instrument used was an interview composed of a structured questionnaire and rapid tests were performed for the acquired immunodeficiency virus (HIV), syphilis, hepatitis B and C in 259 individuals. Results: About knowledge, 80% of respondents had heard about it, 39.8% said there was a high risk of contamination and 23.2% reported no risk. 56.8% of respondents claimed to have started their sexual life before the age of 17. 42.8% said they had between 1 and 2 partners and >3 partners in 57.2%. The average number of partners is 3.0 for Quilombola women and 14.6 for men. For condom use, 49.2% of respondents claimed to use it. The results of the rapid tests identified the presence of STIs in 9.7% of the total sample, considering men and women. Conclusion: The estimate of STIs is important data for the scientific community and public health authorities in relation to access and actions that promote the prevention, promotion and recovery of the health of the quilombola population.
