Abstract

Objective: To analyze the decrease in BCG vaccine coverage in the Southeast Region and describe the possible associated factors in consecutive periods, as well as the relationship between BCG and Sars-CoV-2. Methods: This is an observational, cross-sectional, and quantitative study, encompassing data from the Department of Health Informatics (DATASUS) regarding vaccination coverage from 2015 to 2022, focusing on the southeastern region of the country. Reference sources include Google Scholar, the Virtual Health Library (BVS), the Brazilian Society of Immunization (SBIM), and the World Health Organization (WHO). Results: The analysis revealed a decreasing trend in BCG vaccine coverage in the Southeast Region, especially from 2019 to 2022, with an average below 90%, falling below expectations. The COVID-19 pandemic was correlated with the decline, emphasizing the complex interrelation between epidemiological events and vaccination adherence. Factors such as misinformation, anti-vaccine groups, and logistical challenges were identified as influential in low coverage. Conclusion: Educational strategies adapted to regional characteristics and the promotion of trust in vaccination are essential to reverse the decreasing trend in BCG vaccine coverage in the Southeast Region.
