Abstract

Objective: To identify, in scientific literature, the paternal experience of prenatal care and baby birth. Methods: Integrative review carried out in the LILACS, SciELO and PubMed databases, using the controlled descriptors “Paternity” and “Pre-Natal”, in their versions in Portuguese, Spanish and English, previously searched in DECS and MeSH. Results: 13 articles were selected to compose this review, spanning from 2007 to 2022, all in Portuguese. Paternal participation during prenatal care and childbirth elicited diverse responses. The acceptance and confirmation of the baby's real existence was accompanied by imaging exams and BCFs auscultation. Furthermore, paternal participation during prenatal care enabled a better understanding of the gestational process. Regarding the birth experience, multiple feelings were reported, including fear, nervousness and a sense of responsibility regarding the new social role. Final considerations: Many health professionals still find it difficult to include the partner in the prenatal and birth processes. Including them requires patience, sensitivity and adaptation of healthcare spaces, which corroborates the need for improvements in both staff training and the ambience of services.
