Abstract

Objective: To analyze the reduction in infant mortality in the state of Pernambuco, its main causes and risk factors between 2009 and 2018. Bibliographic review: Infant mortality, determined by the deaths of children in the first year of age, is considered an important sign of the quality of health offered to women and children, therefore designating it as a warning event as it is something potentially avoidable. Using the bibliographic review methodology, studies were identified that analyze the impact that the Infant Mortality Rate in Pernambuco suffered after the implementation of effective actions, Pernambuco recorded in 2017 the lowest infant mortality rate in the entire historical series, in 2007 it showed a rate of 20.1, equivalent to 3,229 deaths in absolute numbers and in 2017 it reached 12.8 deaths for every thousand live births, corresponding to 1,970 deaths of children under one year of age, an accumulated decrease of 35.1%. Final considerations: Actions that have as their main objective to prioritize public policies, aimed at the maternal and child population group, highlighting the quality of health care, accessibility and the production of quality information, in a timely manner, were effective in reducing infant mortality in Pernambuco.
