Abstract

Objective: To analyze the process of training and performance of nurse anesthetists in countries where this practice exists and analyze its implementation in Brazil. Methods: Integrative literature review research, without time frame. 14 articles were selected, with the following thematic axes emerging: Training process; Occupation area; Work supervision; Work process of the nurse anesthetist. Results: The training process generally consists of an average period of 2 years. The nurse anesthetist works in all areas of anesthesia, where the anesthesiologist has priority work in major and extra-sized surgeries. There is a predominance of nurse anesthetists in rural areas, where there is a shortage of anesthesiologists. In most countries there is a need for medical supervision. The work process varies between countries. Studies have highlighted a standard to be followed to unify nurse anesthetists. Final considerations: Nurse anesthetist training takes around 2 years, working mainly in rural areas. We consider that the training of nurse anesthetists is possible in our country, through nursing residency, with the same training period, 2 years, but it must be supported by strict standards and well-defined protocols.
