The importance of nursing care in the reception of adolescents after a suicide attempt

Abstract

Objective: To describe the importance of nursing care in welcoming adolescents, highlighting practices that promote treatment adherence, mental health promotion, and the prevention of new self-harm attempts. Methods: This is an integrative literature review covering the last ten years, conducted in research databases. Results: The analyzed studies indicate that the main factors associated with self-harm attempts in adolescents include violence, family conflicts, social exclusion, and challenges inherent to life cycle transitions. These findings reinforce the importance of nursing professionals in providing support, facilitating treatment adherence, and encouraging the search for specialized care. Final considerations: Self-harm attempts among adolescents represent a significant public health issue, in which nursing care plays a fundamental role. The nurse’s role involves a holistic approach, risk factor identification, mental health assessment, and implementation of therapeutic interventions. Furthermore, individualized care and health education are essential for promoting mental health and preventing suicide. Further studies are needed to improve nursing strategies, considering the psychosocial demands of adolescents undergoing follow-up due to self-harm attempts.
