Abstract
Objective: To understand the role of nurses in managing sedation in intensive care patients. Methods: This is an integrative literature review, where the selection of productions occurred through the Virtual Health Library (BVS) and Pubmed databases. The descriptors for the search in Pubmed were: Pubmed: "Intensive Care Units", "Hypnotics and Sedatives", "Nurses" by the Boolean connector AND and for the search in the VHL were: "Hypnotics and Sedatives", "Enfermeiros", "Unidades de Terapia Intensiva", interconnected by the Boolean connector AND ". Results: We found 27 articles indexed in the Virtual Health Library (VHL) and 211 in Pubmed. Eight articles were selected to compose the final sample. Conclusion: This study concludes that the role of the nurse in the management of sedation of patients in intensive care is associated with a significant improvement in the quality of care, hemodynamic stability and patient comfort.
